I must admit I can count on one hand how many mixed drinks I’ve made during my life. But as I planned our family’s first Derby Party Campside, and knew I needed a Mint Julep recipe that not only tasted good but one I could make successfully.
As I searched for recipes online, if the recipes did not call for powdered sugar, they called for “syrup” or “simple syrup.”
As a southern girl, I’ve always know syrup to be something you put on your pancakes. As for simple syrup…well, I never heard the term before. But a quick internet search of the term set me straight. I needed a mint julep recipe that also included a simple, simple syrup recipe.
After reading several recipes, some fancy, some not, I chose to go with one that appeared to be the easiest: Early Times Mint Julep Recipe on All Recipes.
Go to Early Times(R) Mint Julep Recipe
I made both the Mint Julep and Simple Syrup recipes as directed, with these two small changes:
- Used fresh, organic mint from my Kentucky family’s garden (for the simple syrup recipe and the drink), And put in a few extra leaves (no stalks) in the syrup.
- Used individual 50ml bottles of Early Times Kentucky Whisky (two for each drink) instead of 2 oz per drink.
I also wish I cut the Simple Syrup recipe in half. I had more syrup leftover than I could ever need on a camping trip.
As for the drink’s flavor? The Kentuckian in the family said it was the best Mint Julep he ever had.
Enjoy and Happy Trails,
